Why wait for government – let’s run our own CPD, build a stepchange network and transform education

If you have seen the tweet about using Google Hangouts on Air to build a chain of expertise networks then you’ve come to the right place.

The idea is simple – I want teachers, and especially senior managers to build a chain of localised CPD that can be aggregated and distributed.

I need people to sign up to hold a weekly seminar at distance to:

  1. Orchestrate a Google Hangout on Air about a chosen subject in depth over an hour.
  2. Annotate and archive resources discussed.
  3. Archive and curate the sessions for a nationwide chain of CPD resources and join organisations to build a knowledge CPD infrastructure.

I want this to be different from an online TeachMeet session and more of a reflective practice / sharing of wider management skills.

I don’t want it to mirror the fast full, flow of #UKEDCHAT – I want it to be a slow burn, reflective session that will get people to demonstrate everyday practical things they have implemented in their schools.

People involved would agree to:

  1. Make sure they have the kit we recommend or equivalent for best video and audio broadcast (we do not make a penny from any of this) or high quality equivalent (total cost £300 or less)
  2. Be prepared to clear all video and IPR materials shown on a Google Hangout on Air
  3. Be prepared to agree to a respectful protocol and positive discussion about concrete practical strategies for moving learning on.

The first Google hangout session will be with the first 9 people who can convince me they can do this and have enough will to amplify the sessions.

I will outline what is needed and how to use it, IPR issues and practical strategies. I will also demonstrate the qualities of Google Hangouts on Air and the medium’s Strengths and Weaknesses.

Depending on interest it will be a 2 hour session on Wednesday 23rd May from 20:00 – 21:00 BST and I’ll open it out to the world but have 9 people who are willing to start the first nodes in that session. We will try to see how to amplify this later.

    Hi there,

There is big desire for teachers to help lead their own CPD and I think that at the moment in UK education we are in danger of losing some of the support networks we have.

I’ve been thinking along the same lines and have been using Google+ for TeachMeet style events for the past few months.

Interestingly I have one scheduled just before your discussion so might pop along afterwards.
