RT @Wonderacademy: Welcome to #wonderacademy, let’s share the best of Teachmeet ideas. First up, the fantastic @Edutronic_Net ..follow, enjoy and participateHelene O’Shea
Of course, I recognise I’m the curtain raiser for the main act: @kevbartle (and mighty flattered to be so) #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
Well, Welcome to the teachmeet in a hashtag. I’m Chris Waugh, English teacher at the London Nautical School #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
I’m starting up by sharing some of the work I’ve been doing in my classroom with feedback. It centres on a blogging system #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
You can access it here: http://www.edutronic.net – which is the front page for the whole department #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
EDUTRONICEdutronic is an Open Classroom created by the English teachers of the London Nautical School. You can freely connect to more than 200 stu…
But the real depth of this project comes beyond the class blog, which I still value: http://waugh8.www.edutronic.net #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
All 137 of my student have their own blog – internet facing – which has replaced their books. http://student.edutronic.net #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
@Edutronic_Net #wonderacademy suddenly i feel very inadequate. And I thought a mixture of edmodo, my blog and a vle was doing quite well…jonathan peel
And this is where the magic happens. Already some students are developing a large audience due to the quality of their work #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
RT @Edutronic_Net: But the real depth of this project comes beyond the class blog, which I still value: http://waugh8.www.edutronic.net #wonderacademyEng chat
Alex, for example, is receiving hundreds of hits a day to his blog: http://theamazingkeith.student.edutronic.net #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
But why is this important? For me it’s important because it offers the students something I think is intrinsic to learning #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
AGENCY. The students and their work become the centre of everything. I become a person (amongst many) who comments on it #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
This difference is everything. When it’s their blog, and it’s online, there is a reason to get your spelling right #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
This student’s essay was edited 26 times. It has 14 comments. We collaborate on his work now: (next) #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh

@mrpeel The fascinating thing is that there have been very few cranks. People who do engage with the work are very positive #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
http://gab212.student.edutronic.net/2013/01/14/analytic-essay-the-idea-of-fate/ – my notion of a ‘learning conversation’ #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
#WonderAcademy we use blogs to submit student work… WordPress has excellent spam filters so students get little unwanted feedbackGeorgina Black
@Edutronic_Net #wonderacademy melt down about security and child safety – what safeguards have you in place?jonathan peel
@mrpeel The safeguards are the same type as the ones that allow them to walk down the street safely – awareness of risks #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
Here’s a sample workflow: http://chris.edutronic.net/successful-student-blogging/ #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
@Edutronic_Net #wonderacademy i suppose many will not read it as stnt work – I like the idea enormously. I imagine many schools would have ajonathan peel
#WonderAcademy admittedly blogs are used with 6th form only, but we use public ‘real life’ programme with few problems.Georgina Black
@mrpeel And I moderate all comments. The students can post anything, but comments are approved by me. Very easily done. #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
@Edutronic_Net #wonderacademy I agree, but many schools do not allow wifi/smart phones etc, let alone this.jonathan peel
#wonderacademy Chris, have you had any criticism replacing books with blogs?Wonder Academy
@Edutronic_Net #wonderacademy i use edmodo with cetian groups and this is the next logical step… inspired and planning in my head…jonathan peel
@mrpeel Our school doesn’t allow smart phones too – except in my room, where they are learning tools… #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
“@mrpeel And I moderate all comments. The students can post anything, but comments are approved by me. Very easily done. #wonderacademy” yepGeorgina Black
I think the concern with replacing books is the students handwriting. We have ‘handwriting’ sessions. Feels like candlemaking #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
@mrpeel Our school doesn’t allow smart phones too – except in my room, where they are learning tools… #wonderacademy” same with meGeorgina Black
@GeorgeEBlack #wonderacademy which blogging site do you use?jonathan peel
#wonderacademy @Edutronic_Net Aren’t there rules about no pics and 1st names only for security? Most schools do that I thinkCherrylkd
@Edutronic_Net #WonderAcademy Do you have any concerns around student preparation for handwritten exams?Keven Bartle
Parents now see their children’s work – and they participate in their learning. Subscribe to the class blog › informed. #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
@mrpeel I use wordpress, our own installation #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
@julescporter a teachmeet. We use #wonderacademy to joinRos McMullen
@mrpeel #wonderacademy most students use blogger or wordpress, I use wordpress. OCR Media Studies requires cw submission by blogGeorgina Black
@mrpeel @edutronic_net I’m feeling your frustration. SLT pulled plug on my Edmodo enterprises for child protection reasons! #wonderacademyJohn Stanier
@Edutronic_Net #wonderacademy spoke to a colleague today who was concerned about material exisiting for ever in the ether…jonathan peel
I believe we should be noticing what is happening outside the school walls, and recruiting it to our needs in class #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
@RosMcM immense potential , a meeting of like minds all wanting to influence the wider system of teaching #genius #inspired #wonderacademyJules Millar
#wonderacademy I wish I had the nerve to embrace tech in this wayWonder Academy
#WonderAcademy school blogging system open to students , their school tutor and the student’s parents & is meant to be a perminant recordGeorgina Black
#wonderacademy Some great ideas from @Edutronic_Net…any more comments/questions?Wonder Academy
#wonderacademy and I could do the QC book check without leaving the house…jonathan peel
My blogging system is open to the entire internet. It leads to this: http://gab212.student.edutronic.net/2012/10/24/8f-english-blog-awards-e-b-a/ #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
#WonderAcademy this is how I use a blog in my teaching…student blogs linked on the right http://mrsblacksmedia2.wordpress.com/Georgina Black
#wonderacademy I love the freedom of it all…Wonder Academy
Here’s a presentation I did to Teachmeet BETT about it: http://chris.edutronic.net/teachmeet-bett-2/ #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
#wonderacademy I introduced blogging for GTPs a while ago… seems daft not to extend to studentsjonathan peel
Another strong benefit is that they actively look at each others work. They build on it. Read each others controlled assments #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
I direct them to other students’ work to exemplify feedback I’m giving – often show a Year 9 some Year 10 work.. (next) #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
I’ll show this to a Year 9 to exemplify structure: http://the_great_one.student.edutronic.net/2012/12/16/controlled-assessment-spoken-language-study/ #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
And if you’re an English teacher reading my students assessments, feel free to give your opinion of my assessment decisions. #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
Everything I do as a teacher is open to scrutiny – I think this is healthy – but I admit it’s also brave. #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
Thank you very much to @wonderacademy for inviting me to participate in this forum – She’s all yours @kevbartle #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh

Mr Podhajecki & the Airfix KidI sometimes think that the students who arrive at secondary schools are a bit like the Airfix kits that my brother used to love and be so…
Ermm. Hello. *taps mike*. Is this working. *blows into it*. Hello. #WonderAcademyKeven Bartle
Right. Now I was going to do something smart on Hattie and my concerns about reliance on effect sizes…..#WonderAcademyKeven Bartle
Mr Podhajecki & the Airfix Kid http://wp.me/p2Hxfu-4Z >> NEW POST about my best ever teacher ahead of #WonderAcademy this evening.Keven Bartle
But then I decided I wanted to do something to tap into the wonder part of the #WonderAcademy so I wrote this blogpost (next)Keven Bartle
Mr Podhajecki & the Airfix Kid http://wp.me/p2Hxfu-4Z >> NEW POST about my best ever teacher ahead of #WonderAcademy this evening.Keven Bartle
The point of the post and of this session is about what we draw down from the teachers who inspired us into our own practice.#WonderAcademyKeven Bartle
The teacher in my post was my English teacher Mr Pod and his impact on my life, but the post reflects beyond that. #WonderAcademyKeven Bartle
In the post I posit that it is the quality of teaching, not the force of personality that makes great teachers great. #WonderAcademyKeven Bartle
And that we work best with ‘broken’ children when we hold out the highest standards for them to reach. #WonderAcademyKeven Bartle
@kevbartle I would agree with this, but only if you hold the word ‘teaching’ to be an all-encompassing term #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
@Edutronic_Net Yes. That relationships are key but within a teaching relationship. #WonderAcademyKeven Bartle
@kevbartle #wonderacademy standards being high in all areas – paedagogy, professional life, care, devotion to role as educatorjonathan peel
I come not with a lesson to teach but a question to ask. Who was that teacher & what do you carry from them into your work? #WonderAcademyKeven Bartle
#wonderacademy Do our memories hold more on teacher personality or quality of teaching?Wonder Academy
And what might we do to make us more memorable or more impactful on the lives of students?#wonderacademyKeven Bartle
@Gwenelope #WonderAcademy thank you!Georgina Black
@kevbartle #wonderacademy my father taught music – fair, firm, eccentric, caring and committed to excellence – sometimes I hope to emulatejonathan peel
@Wonderacademy #wonderacademy often personality – do we remember great teaching from a dull teacher? Does it exist?jonathan peel
@Edutronic_Net Stellar effort on #wonderacademy this evening, Chris – so pleased it’s going well for you!Mark Allen
This teacher in my live taught me compassion and self-acceptance. #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
#wonderacademy I think students do respond to great personalities but will acknowledge the impact of teaching later on in life?Wonder Academy
I don’t feel the need to be remembered. I also like the idea that my impact is subtle and enabling rather than memorable. #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
#wonderacademy Contributions folks..,who inspired you and why?Wonder Academy
#wonderacademy there is a concern about a teacher who actively seeks guru status – smacks of Mr Samgrassjonathan peel
#wonderacademy at school Mr Andrew Davies – English, who taught lying on his back due to some unspecified ailment and blew our minds…jonathan peel
@kevbartle OK that made me cry. And it inspired me. Not much does that these days. #wonderacademyRos McMullen
“@RosMcM: @kevbartle OK that made me cry. And it inspired me. Not much does that these days. #wonderacademy” >> What gets in the way now?Keven Bartle
@mrpeel #wonderacademy by showing that MArlowe was a genius. At uni, the great @wmarybeard left an indelible memory.jonathan peel
#wonderacademy Mr Craggs for his brute stubbornness to not give up on anyone despite how much of a twat they had been!Claire Doherty
Is it wrong to want to be remembered by students? Is it counterproductive? #wonderacademyKeven Bartle
@Edutronic_Net me too #wonderacademyjonathan peel
“@mrlockyer: Sorry it’s a pearoast, but thought it relevant – My Best Teacher – http://www.classroomtm.co.uk/my-best-teacher-ukedchat/ #WonderAcademy” @Edutronic_NetKeven Bartle
I’m teaching the subject of the teachers who inspired me. #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
@kevbartle #wonderacademy no, but it is the seeking to be remembered that is dangerousjonathan peel
#wonderacademy How many of us thought we’d become teachers when taught?Wonder Academy
#WonderAcademy As pupils we wanted to be taught by certain teachers. Personality, popularity, excellent teachers. I hope to be one of those.Neil Phipps
@kevbartle I do think it’s the wrong motive. Students don’t need to feel they have to meet our needs as adults. #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
@JobieJo66: #wonderacademy For me – both! My A Level RE teacher was motivational & inspirational through her life story and teaching style.Wonder Academy
@Wonderacademy I definitely wanted to be a teacher – but was actively discouraged. #wonderacademyChristopher Waugh
"@Wonderacademy: #wonderacademy How many of us thought we’d become teachers when taught?" > nah, wanted to be a dancer! 30 yrs of teaching!!Helen Bicker
@Gwenelope: #wonderacademy My English teachers were gently encouraging to the me that meek and invisible. Gave me idea that I could!Wonder Academy
@hembick @Wonderacademy #wonderacademy it was part of the plan, but a lot else intervened first.jonathan peel
The boy who saved my life (in teaching) http://wp.me/p2Hxfu-b >> And what about students who inspire US #wonderacademyKeven Bartle
@kevbartle Most of us? Inspiring teachers pass passion and love for subject. I’m proud when students continue in my subject. #WonderAcademyNeil Phipps

“@commaficionado: @Gwenelope @kevbartle as were mine. Always very memorable and fantastic teachers.” #WonderAcademyKeven Bartle
#wonderacademy As in Keven’s blog, the teacher who inspired me most was one that showed confidence in me at a time of personal difficultyWayne Jenkins
@kevbartle #wonderacademy i often wonder how the teachers that taught me 40 years ago would cope in this era of constant league tables andjonathan peel
@kevbartle #wonderacademy appraisal every ten minutes… no 3 part lessons evident there and even some teacher talk – hung on every wordjonathan peel
@kevbartle #wonderacademy I’m loving it…I’m reading so much I’m forgetting to say anything…more chilled than your normal #chatsWonder Academy

“@geek_oclock: I had an excellent teacher for Physics. Inspirational&thought provoking. He destroyed under current style .” #wonderacademyKeven Bartle
